Turkey decided to change its name for the whole world

“Türkiye is the best representation and expression of culture, the civilization and values of the Turkish people,” the president had said in December.

One of the main reasons focuses on the meaning of “Turkey”: in the English language it means turkey and refers worldwide to the bird traditionally associated with Christmas, New Year or Thanksgiving in the United States and some European countries.

In the Cambridge English Dictionary it is also defined as “something seriously wrong” or “a stupid or foolish person”.

It is for this reason that the brand “Made in Turkey” will cover the country and the exported products, as part of a tourism campaign launched in January and which has its own slogan: “Hello Turkiye.”

The Communications Directorate of the Turkish presidency said it launched the campaign “to more effectively promote the use of ‘Türkiye’ as the country’s national and international name on international platforms.”

However, this name was not born now: the country called itself “Türkiye” when it declared independence in 1923.

It is not clear whether the name, with a letter that does not exist in the English alphabet, will catch on widely abroad.. In 2016, the Czech Republic officially registered its short name, Czechia, and although some international institutions use it, many still refer to the country by its longer name.

The last country to change its official name was the Netherlands, which was previously named Holland. Shortly before, Macedonia became North Macedoniaafter its dispute with Greece, and Swaziland also changed its name to Eswantini.
