The proposed new committee will bring together international organizations, regulators, political authorities and data service providers responsible for designing a public open data platform that will collect and standardize data from transition to net zero emissions in the private sector.
Macron has wanted to demonstrate his international leadership in the fight against global warming despite criticism from environmentalists and climate scientists in his country. Last year he pledged to create a “one planet data center” whose goal is to bring together comprehensive data on climate issues in a way that is accessible to the public.
Bloomberg, the UN Special Envoy for Climate Ambition and Solutions, stated Friday that the new platform would make it “much more difficult for companies to ‘greenwash’ or make empty promises that don’t actually reduce emissions, forcing them to back their words with actions.
The Climate Data Steering Committee will present its findings and share a roadmap for a global open data platform in September, during the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the Elysee said in the statement.
