The television station TV Markiza estimated the number of injuries on Friday evening at up to a hundred. The Ministry of Transport in Bratislava and the state railway company confirmed the accident to the TASR news agency, but initially did not want to provide any information on the number of injuries or deaths.
Important railway junction
The police called on drivers via digital networks to avoid the area around the scene of the accident near the northern Slovakian municipality of Strecno in order to facilitate access for fire brigades and rescue vehicles.
The Ministry of Transport announced that Minister of Transport Andrej Dolezal was on his way to the scene of the accident. This is close to an important railway junction where the railway lines from the interior of the country to Bratislava and those to the Czech Republic meet.
There was also a serious train accident in Bavaria on Friday. Four people died and dozens were injured after a regional train derailed near Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
