The Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) issues a thunderstorm warning for Sunday. In the evening, after a hot summer’s day with highs of up to 30 degrees, a striking cold front pulls through and brings with it violent thunderstorms with heavy rain, gusty winds and hail.
The strongest thunderstorms are expected between 5 p.m. in the Innviertel and 9 p.m. (central area, Phyrn-Eisenwurzen). The heaviest downpours are expected to fall in the Innviertel (orange warning level), storms with peak speeds of 80 km/h and above are likely in all parts of the country. There can also be hail.
The ZAMG recommends particular caution:
- Lightning strikes can set buildings or trees on fire.
- Wind gusts can throw objects around, break off large branches, and uproot trees.
- Fallen trees or lightning strikes can cause power outages.
- Roof tiles can fall or canopies can be damaged.
- Obstacles are to be expected in road, rail and air traffic.
- Significantly increased risk of accidents in road traffic due to cross winds, aquaplaning and poor visibility
- Roads may be impassable due to mudslides, fallen trees, or washouts.
- Underpasses can be flooded.
- Streams can burst their banks or basements and garages can be flooded.
- Hail can damage orchards, greenhouses or vehicles.
The meteorologists recommend taking precautions in good time when a thunderstorm front is approaching:
- Secure moveable outdoor objects (such as party tents, trampolines, or patio furniture). Take off the parasols and pull in the awnings.
- Close windows, doors and garage doors as well as skylights and skylights.
- Observe the local weather development and be aware of the risk of lightning.
- Take shelter outdoors in good time! Heed thunderstorm and storm warnings at lakes.
