Sixteen South Korean fighter jets, including stealth aircraft F-35 and four fighters F-16formed a strike squad over the Yellow Sea to “respond to the enemy threat,” South Korea’s chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.
The allies “demonstrated their strong ability and willingness to strike quickly and accurately in the face of any North Korean provocation.”he added.
The aerial exercises, in which some 20 warplanes participated, took place a day after the allies fired eight ballistic missiles at the sea of japan after tests with similar weapons by North Korea.
On Sunday, North Korea fired eight short-range ballistic missiles from four different locations in the space of 30 minutes, in one of its biggest tests, according to analysts.
Officials in the United States and South Korea have warned for weeks that the Kim Jong Un prepares to carry out a new nuclear test.
US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said on a three-day visit to Seoul that there would be a “swift and forceful” response if Pyongyang decided to go ahead with what would be its seventh such test.
Sherman said the United States is still open to dialogue with North Korea, as it “has no hostile intent toward” Pyongyang.
Tuesday’s air drills are the allies’ third joint show of force under the new South Korean president, Yoon Suk-yeolwhich promised a tougher stance toward Pyongyang.
