The regional court in Zagreb sentenced the Viennese to 50 years in prison, Croatian media reported. The man had pleaded guilty to killing his children in September 2021. The judgment is not final.
guilty verdict after two hours
The trial began on Tuesday in camera. The HINA news agency reported that the guilty verdict was reached after just two hours. The verdict was announced publicly. For each individual murder, the Austrian was sentenced to 27 years in prison, which added up to the maximum possible sentence of 50 years, it said.
The defendant’s lawyer announced an appeal, the Internet portal “24 Sata” reported. The 57-year-old has expressed no desire to serve his sentence in Austria once the verdict has become final, it has been reported.
Drugged and strangled
According to the police and the prosecution, the man killed his children – a four-year-old son and seven-year-old twins – in his apartment in Zagreb, after which he tried to take his own life. He was divorced from the mother of their children, and the siblings had spent the weekend with him.
During the investigation, it turned out that the man first drugged the children and then strangled them. According to the “Index” news portal, he had dissolved the sedatives in warm cocoa.
