Tragic start to the season in Meggenhofen

When die-hard Upper Austrians go to the premiere of “India” this Saturday at the theater summer in the Hofbühne in Meggenhofen, they will surprisingly feel at home there. Not only that the tragic comedy by Josef Hader and Alfred Dorfer does not take place in Mumbai or Delhi, as the name would suggest.

The ensemble also moved the play from its original location in the Vienna area to Upper Austria – “brought it to the country”, as Fritz Egger says: “Many places and names will be known to the Meggenhofen audience,” announces the director of the Meggenhofen theater.

He will slip into the role of “Heinzi Bösel” himself on June 11th. Together with “Kurt Fellner”, played by Peter Scholz from the Theater in der Josefstadt, he philosophizes about life in the tavern. Directed by Michael Gampe.

In addition to the humor that is to be expected in view of the well-known authors, the team decided on this play mainly because of its great depth, says Egger. “I think towards the end, when death creeps in, there will definitely be a handkerchief or two,” says the actor.

“Brandner Kasper” returns

The ensemble will perform “Indien” six times in June. There is also a rich programme: on June 19, Angelika Kirchschlager and Alfred Dorfer combine comedy with classic in “Tod eines Pudels”. There is a jazz matinee, readings, a puppet theater and recitals. From August, the theater will resume its successful production “Der Brandner Kasper und das immer’ Leben”, which received the state’s stage award last year.

For Fritz Egger, it is the third year in which he can actually work as director of the theater summer – the 2020 season was completely canceled due to the pandemic. “I’m really happy that I can work with the active and great theater association in Meggenhofen,” says the actor, who grew up in Grieskirchen.

After three years, the cooperation has worked well. “We now know from each other who is good at which task. It’s like a big theater family that keeps growing together,” says Egger.
