The WEGA officials swapped their uniforms for costumes and abseiled down the roof of the clinic as Batman, Spiderman, Flash and Aquaman, among others. A policewoman from the Vienna State Criminal Police Office slipped into the Wonder Woman costume to support her colleagues.
First, the police helicopter with Superman and Thor on board flew over the children’s ward. Finally, with all eyes turned upwards, the policewoman and the four policemen lowered themselves from the roof to the children’s windows. With musical accompaniment from the Vienna police band and the applause of girls and boys who were temporarily allowed to leave the station, the costumed people hung on the outer wall until they could really wish every sick child enough strength for a speedy recovery. Personal souvenir photos and gifts from the children’s police were then given in the sickrooms.
“When the superheroes and superheroines visit our clinic in Donaustadt, our little patients are particularly happy about this special change,” said Herbert Kurz, head of the department for paediatrics, and Thomas Benkö, head of the department for Pediatric and Adolescent Surgery, and Andrea Lehensteiner, Nursing Manager of the two departments at the Donaustadt Clinic, agree. “This action is now a fixed date for the Vienna police and a matter of honor for the WEGA rope technicians,” said their commander Ernst Albrecht.
