Vehicle drove into crowds in Berlin: one dead, eight injured

According to the police, the vehicle was a car. The alleged driver was arrested on the spot. The background was initially unclear.

“It is not yet known whether it was an accident or intentional action. Emergency services are holding the man who is said to have been driving on site,” said the Donut known to the police on Twitter. The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on Tauentzienstrasse, near the Memorial Church and the Ku’damm. The car is said to have driven onto a sidewalk and there into a group of people and a shop. According to the “Bild” newspaper, it was a silver Renault Twingo.

The police and fire brigade were on duty and tended to the injured. The area around was cordoned off. “There are currently around 60 emergency services on site or on the way,” the fire department tweeted. The fire brigade had initially spoken of 30 injuries. A photo posted online showed a car parked in a shop window.

The scene was near the site of a deadly attack on December 19, 2016, when Anis Amri, a failed Tunisian asylum seeker with Islamist connections, hijacked a truck, killing the driver and then plowing it into a crowded West Berlin Christmas market. Eleven people died in the rubble, and a few years later a 49-year-old succumbed to the after-effects of an injury he sustained while rushing to help the victims. He is classified as the 13th victim of the attack.

The British actor John Barrowman is currently in Berlin and describes the incident in a video:
