a bridge collapsed leaving at least 25 injured

According to the Civil Protection coordinator of the state of Morelos, where Cuernavaca is located, Enrique Clemente, among the total number of injured there are two people in serious condition.

“What we have in the preliminary count were two very injured people of first priority, who were helped. The walk is complicated because there are many stairs, a very steep slope and you have to get them out with a lot of work”, Clemente said in an interview with the newspaper Milenio.

The Civil Protection employee explained that the structure rose about three meters above the ground, and that the victims fell on a surface full of stones and sand, which caused more serious injuries.

“Most were public servants. It is a bridge that had just been restored. It is assumed that he should have complied with all the security conditions, but we do not know this part, ”he has settled.

For his part, the governor of Morelos, Cuauhtémoc Blanco Bravo, has released a message on his social networks, where he has lamented the incident, and has indicated that he hopes there are no serious injuries. “We make ourselves available for any action we can take to support them,” concluded the state representative.

Cuernavaca is located south of Mexico City, and has long been a place of rest for the inhabitants of the capital due to its abundance of water and its mild climate.

The pedestrian bridge was part of a riverside promenade along one of the many streams in the city.

As a consequence of its explosive growth, Cuernavaca has neglected or polluted many of its channels. The river walk was intended to be part of the recovery of the city’s natural attractions.
