The vehicle, a metallic gray Renault Clio, ended up crashing around 10:30 a.m. into a shop window near the Berlin Zoo train station.
Right after, the driver of the car tried to escape but was intercepted by pedestrians and then detained by the police, explained Thilo Cablitz, a security forces official at the scene. He is a 29-year-old Armenian-German.
The Berlin police, who for the moment did not specify whether it was a deliberate act or an accident, reported on Twitter that there was one deceased person.
The tragic event occurred in a busy commercial area in the west of Berlin and, according to initial information, the vehicle climbed onto the road and entered a store as a result of the impact. The emergency and fire teams have moved to the scene with some 130 troops to attend to those affected.
The events took place near the Memorial Church, an emblematic monument in the western part of the German capital, located in one of the busiest commercial arteries in Berlin, the Kurfürstendamm.
The place was the scene of the attack perpetrated in 2016 against a Berlin Christmas market, an event that resulted in twelve fatalities. Anis Amri, a Tunisian citizen who had claimed asylum in the country, rammed a truck into the square in front of this church, near the main shopping street in the west of the German capital.
A witness, who did not want to reveal his identity, said the driver rammed “a group of students” before going through a red light and continuing to drive at “excessive speed.”
According to various media, the victim is a teacher who accompanied that group. A body covered with blue and white blankets could still be seen in the street hours after the tragedy, AFP journalists confirmed.

So far there is no official confirmation of the number of injured. The firefighters initially reported eight injuries of varying degrees, but according to other sources, such as the RBB chain, they amount to at least 30.
