14 dead in a clash between artisanal miners

The clashes between the rival groups of miners began last Thursday, but because of the distance from the place the authorities were slow to learn of the facts and to find the bodies.

The clashes were caused by the dispute over a gold deposit that both groups wanted to exploit in a sector known as Huanaquitalocal media reported.

“We are meeting because we want justice, we want military intervention. We have 14 fallen miners and 8 disappeared, there are so many families in mourning,” said a representative of the miners in a video broadcast on social networks, according to El Comercio de Perú.

This type of conflict between miners is common in remote areas of Peruwhere the presence of the State is almost nil.

Already on Thursday, at least 7 people had been reported dead and another 30 detained in the confrontation.

The Provincial Corporate Specialized Prosecutor’s Office Against Organized Crime of Arequipa investigates the events and reported that in addition to the arrests, firearms, ammunition and bulletproof vests were seized.

Another group of participants in the clashes was arrested in a town in the neighboring region of Ayacucho, so they are expected to be transferred to Arequipa to carry out investigations to determine if they used firearms.

The newspaper La República added that five of the victims last Thursday, all men, had already been identified by the National Police and the Public Ministry and their bodies were transferred to the headquarters of the Institute of Legal Medicine in the city of Arequipa.
