NGO ships with 436 refugees reached Sicily

Two NGO ships with a total of 436 migrants on board are allowed to land in Sicily. 344 people are on the German rescue ship “Sea Watch 3”, including 118 minors, as the German aid organization “Sea Watch” announced. Another 92 people rescued by the Italian rescue ship Mare Jonio last weekend will also disembark in Pozzallo on Thursday. Both ships were assigned the port of Pozzallo by the Italian authorities at the request of both humanitarian organizations.

Most migrants come from Tunisia, Pakistan, Syria and Sudan, it said. Since the beginning of 2022, more than 20,000 migrants have arrived in Italy after sea voyages across the Mediterranean, according to the Interior Ministry in Rome. In the same period of 2021, there were 14,962.

The new wave of refugees creates tension in Rome. The leader of Italy’s co-governing right-wing Lega party, Matteo Salvini, accused Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese of failing to do anything to curb immigration flows.
