The 29-year-old driver was arrested and admitted to a hospital and it was still unknown if it was an accident, a medical emergency or a deliberate act.
The man got on the sidewalk at approximately 10:30 local time and first rammed his car into a group of people. He then continued driving another 200 meters, went off the road again and crashed into the home of a chain of perfume stores.
The incident occurred near the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, in the most famous shopping area of the German capital, Kurfürstendamm avenue, very close to the place where in December 2016 an Islamist terrorist intentionally ran over a crowd at a Christmas market, in an attack in which 12 people were killed and more than 70 were injured. About 130 police officers and a hundred firefighters moved to the scene, who cordoned off the area.
Several hours after the incident, a shopping center across the street was evacuated as a precaution while the car was checked for anything dangerous, police said.
Signs with inscriptions were found in the vehicle, as well as written documents. The head of the interior of the city-state, Iris Spranger, clarified that it was not a letter in which she claimed responsibility for the attack as such. “We are still examining the nature of the statements in the documents and placards found in the car,” a police spokeswoman said.
From the federal government, the Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, and the President, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, expressed their dismay at what happened. “My thoughts are with the seriously and very seriously injured, with the fatality,” Steinmeier said. “And they are with those who had to live through terrible things. My deepest condolences to them, to all the relatives and to the bereaved families.”
