A climber was caught on the descent of boulders and buried under the rock masses, said a police spokesman for the APA and confirmed media reports. The man was traveling with four other alpinists. During a rappelling exercise and when the climber wanted to release, there was finally a rock fracture.
A search operation with several mountain rescue services, fire brigades, helicopters and avalanche dogs was started, but had to be stopped for the time being. It is currently too dangerous and could also follow rock, the police said on Thursday afternoon.
The alpinist is said to have been buried under a two to three meter high layer of rock and some large boulders. According to the reports, the dogs were able to sniff out the man under a massive rock fall, but he was not to be seen for the time being. The four others climber remained unharmed.
