The subject entered the factory this Thursday afternoon and opened fire on the employees, injuring several of them and causing fatalities. Officers responded to a phone call and confronted the shooter, who was injured and hospitalized.
Lt. McCauley noted that the scene remains active but there is no threat to the community. Likewise, he confirmed that the individual was transferred to a hospital but did not give details about his condition. A police officer was injured with a fire bullet.
“We are actively monitoring the #Smithsburg mass shooting at this time, and our office is in contact with officials on the ground,” U.S. Rep. David Trone of Maryland said on Twitter.
“If you’re from the area, please stay away while law enforcement responds,” Trone said.
The company where the shooting took place markets machinery and “complete lines of equipment to customers in more than 100 countries.”
Smithsburg is in northern Maryland, near the Pennsylvania state line.
Last week, US President Joe Biden urged lawmakers to pass a ban on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines to individuals to help curb the mass shootings ravaging the country.
“How many more killings are we willing to accept?” Biden asked in a televised address, saying that if a ban is not achieved, the age to buy such weapons should be raised from 18 to 21.
Biden called the refusal of most Republican senators to vote for tougher gun rules “inconceivable.”
Since the beginning of the year, in just 145 days, the United States has suffered 213 mass shootings, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which counts incidents with at least four victims (dead or injured) in this category, not including the attacker.
So far in 2022, two great massacres have mourned American society. The first occurred in Buffalo, in which an 18-year-old murdered 18 people. The second, more recent, was in Uvalde, Texas, where another 18-year-old killed several students at a school.
