The domestic transporters criticize the measure. “We stand by the climate goals, but realistically they can only be achieved if there are competitive alternatives,” said Alexander Klacska, head of the transport and traffic division at the Austrian Chamber of Commerce.
Hydrogen and e-fuels, i.e. climate-neutral fuels, could serve as alternatives for cars and trucks. Here, however, politicians must act quickly, said Klacska. The Central Association of Forwarding and Logistics followed this demand. “If politicians do not allow the use of alternatives to petrol and diesel, the basic features of the movement of goods and the supply of goods will be endangered,” said President Alexander Friesz.
“Reversal is irreversible”
The two German car manufacturers Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz welcomed the end of combustion engines, even if they described the timing as “ambitious”. “The turn to electromobility is irreversible,” said VW. The task now is to push the supply of battery cells, expand the charging infrastructure more quickly and accelerate the energy transition.
