“I wanna wake up in a city that doesn’t sleep” – this is how a restless Frank Sinatra sings about the city of New York. A line of text that also applies to Wels on June 24th and 25th, which invites you to a 40-hour city festival on both days under the patronage of the OÖ Nachrichten. When the program ends at 11 p.m. on the first day of the city festival, the celebrations continue in Wels’ night gastronomy, which due to an ordinance does not close until 6 a.m. “I’ve already gotten time off at home,” Mayor Andreas Rabl (FP) sets a good example as he celebrates. On Saturday, the Hendlmarkt offers a seamless connection. Die-hards should still be able to enjoy the morning pint at the weekly market from 9 a.m. before the city festival program continues.
A big family
30 Wels clubs, 20 companies, five schools, three kindergartens and three charity organizations form one big family on both days. The city center becomes a party zone. 70 booths represent the entire breadth of urban life. Local bands play on the open stage, while Hoamspü and the Hot Pants Road Club make guest appearances on the main stage.
Action and thrills are also popular. The particularly courageous can bungee jump from a 56 meter high Felbermayr crane on the town square. Rappelling down from the third floor of the Wels town hall takes a similar amount of effort. The Wels rope manufacturer Teufelberger provides the support. In the Freiung, a fun area with an action course from the main sponsor Sparkasse awaits sleepless city festival visitors. On both days, Kaiser-Josef-Platz is home to the heroes of everyday life: the fire brigade, police and Red Cross offer hands-on stations.
Shops stay open until 10 p.m. on Friday. Anyone who sets off on a shopping tour with the Wels Card is credited ten percent of the purchase value. (fam)
