A night full of concerts, storytelling, discussion rounds and special places of prayer: Today, Friday, the night in more than 300 parishes and parishes throughout Austria is all about the church.
“I am pleased that the ecumenical Christian churches in Upper Austria are taking part in the Long Night of the Churches again this year – after a break due to the corona virus,” says Maria Krone, project manager of the Diocese of Linz (you can read about the career of project manager Maria Krone under Upper Austrian of the day on page 32). With the project, the diocese wants to set an example for an open, ecumenical and diverse church. Above all, the event of this size would not be possible without the numerous volunteers, says Krone.
freedom and peace
There is something for every taste in the program of the Long Night of Churches: Large choir concerts take place in Linz in the parish church of Urfahr, in the old cathedral and in the Minoritenkirche. The Catholic Private University Linz invites you to a discussion about freedom, peace and responsibility, in which interlocutors from art, journalism and religion debate the role of the individual and society.
“‘During the day the Lord sends his goodness and at night his song is with me’ – this year’s motto of the Long Night of the Churches expresses: God lovingly accompanies the light and dark hours of our lives,” says Bishop Manfred Scheuer about the Event.
In the Mariendom in Linz, families with children have the opportunity from 3 p.m. to get a glimpse of the otherwise inaccessible areas of the cathedral. In the Stadtpfarrkirche, the oldest parish church in Linz, organ music and duets can be heard from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., the “Urbi” is dedicated to the themes of the Bible, faith and homosexuality.
