Fearing that Moscow might use immigrants to exert political pressurethe Finnish government is preparing legislative changes to facilitate the construction of stronger fences on its 1,300-kilometer border with Russia.
“The objective of the law is to improve the operational capacity of the border guard to respond to hybrid threats,” Anne Ihanus, adviser to the Ministry of the Interior, told AFP. “The war in Ukraine has added to the urgency of this issue,” she added.
Currently, the borders of Finland mostly have wooden fences, used to prevent cattle from moving.
“What we now want to build is a robust fence with a real barrier effect,” said Sanna Palo, director of the Finnish border guard’s legal division.
“Very likely the fence will not cover the entire eastern border, but will focus on the places considered most important,” he explained.
Finland recently applied to join NATO and Russia warned that joining would be “a serious mistake with far-reaching consequences.”
