Connected people and technology in action

When the sirens sound and blue lights flash at the Hanover exhibition center from June 20th to 25th, it’s Interschutz time again. Due to a two-year forced break due to the pandemic, the world of fire brigades had to wait seven years for the leading trade fair for fire brigade, rescue and safety technology. Now the Interschutz is returning with full force, the “Red Rooster” is crowing all the heartier. Of course, Upper Austrian companies are also presenting their new products at Interschutz, such as the fire brigade outfitter Rosenbauer from Leonding.

“Teams, tactics, technology – networked protection and rescue” is the main theme of the fair. This is aimed at two aspects that are crucial for the present and the future: the use of modern digital solutions, but also the cooperation of the different actors and institutions.

Digitization affects everyone

The world is currently changing at an enormous pace. The reason for this is the digitization of all areas of life. The Internet, mobile communication and, to an increasing extent, the Internet of Things have fundamentally changed all areas of life and continue to do so. This also applies to the players and institutions involved in averting danger, from the fire brigade to the rescue service and civil protection officers – worldwide. New technological possibilities open up new dimensions in the prevention and management of crises and dangers.

Big Challenges

However, the possibilities alone do not lead to success, they must be coordinated and used sensibly. People are still the focus. But the tasks of the people and institutions that intervene in emergency and dangerous situations are changing.

The individual actors from hazard prevention and disaster control must act in a networked manner before the crisis and during it. Integrated safety communication plays a key role here. Because organizational and communicative measures are just as important as technical solutions.

Think system further

Dieter Siegel, CEO of Rosenbauer International, gives an example of networking: “Let’s take a forest fire: We can equip emergency services with all the products needed to fight forest fires, from all-terrain fire engines to interchangeable tank systems for aircraft, but at the same time we know that preventive measures are unequal would be more effective in minimizing the catastrophic effects of wildfires on the climate. That’s why we consciously go beyond our borders and are now also developing the know-how for early detection on the subject of forest fires.” Of course, this not only addresses fire brigades, but also other institutions. “Regardless of who is involved with the topic of forest fires and what the topic is in detail, we want to be the first point of contact,” says Siegel, naming a focus for the coming Interschutz. The same applies to electromobility and digitization. That’s why the Upper Austrian fire brigade outfitter is conducting intensive research on all of these future topics. When it comes to forest fires, for example, intensive work is currently being done on monitoring systems based on satellite data to identify vegetation stress. In the field of electromobility, attention is currently focused on the drive train and the charging infrastructure.

As far as digitization is concerned, the drone has recently found its way into the Upper Austrian fire service.

The city and the country

But one thing will also become apparent at Interschutz: the development of fire services in town and country will differ. In rural areas, conventional vehicles will still be in service for a long time, while in cities that already have clear CO2 exit scenarios, fire brigade fleets will have to be switched to alternative drives relatively quickly. “One of the highlights of Interschutz will therefore be our ‘Electric Urban Fire Station’, in which we will be showing other electric vehicles in addition to the RT,” reveals Siegel.

Don’t worry, if you can’t make it to the Interschutz, you have the opportunity to visit the “Retter Wels”, Austria’s leading trade fair for emergency organizations, from September 22nd to 24th.

interprotection

Interschutz will take place in Hanover from June 20th to 25th. This world’s leading trade fair for firefighting and rescue technology normally takes place every five years. Corona has extended this interval to seven years. The experts are all the more excited about the new – often forward-looking – developments from the think tanks of the best-known outfitters.
