In an interview with UK radio station LBC, Johnson said the planned changes to the Northern Ireland Protocol are “trivial“and do not violate international law.
The project is contested by opposition MPs and is under threat of retaliation from Brussels, while companies say it will further weaken the British economy.
But for Johnson, the bill proposes only “a set of relatively superfluous adjustments in the large set of issues.”
He also said it was an “overreaction” if the EU were to respond to the protocol changes by starting a trade war with the UK.
Opposition parties and some Conservatives argue that the plan allowing the UK to unilaterally ignore most of the protocol agreed with the European Union would break international law.
“I think that our most important commitment as a country is with the Good Friday agreement in Belfast and with the balance and stability of that agreement,” said the premier after assuring that it is all they are trying to maintain.
The legislation will give ministers powers to override elements of the protocol, agreed jointly by the UK and the EU as part of the Brexit Withdrawal agreement to maintain free movement of the Irish land border.
The changes require regulatory checks and customs declarations on goods moving between the UK and Northern Ireland.
