A total of 13 fire departments with 170 firefighters were involved in the extinguishing operation. They were able to successfully prevent the fire from spreading, as the Liezen area fire brigade announced during the night. Because of the large amount of smoke, the population was temporarily asked to keep the windows closed.
Extinguishing robot in use
The fire broke out in the late afternoon in a warehouse where bulky waste was stored for sorting. When firefighters arrived, the warehouse building was already engulfed in flames. Falling parts of the hall partially hindered a secured extinguishing operation, which is why remote-controlled extinguishing robots were used.
The wind transported clouds of smoke towards Selzthal. As a precautionary measure, the Styrian provincial warning center issued radio announcements for the Selzthal area, according to which the population should not be outdoors and should keep the windows closed.
The post-extinguishing work continued during the night. The cause of the fire will be discussed on Tuesday. The hall construction was a total loss.
