“Unique Pregnancy”: Former cancer patient in baby happiness

In a broadcast, the tirol kliniken spoke of a “pregnancy that was unique in Austria”. At that time it was still an experimental procedure to remove ovarian tissue.

The OÖN reported:

The woman suffered from cancer of the lymphatic system, which is often treated with a “very aggressive form of chemotherapy”. As a result, women are often no longer able to become pregnant. That’s why egg cells were usually frozen at the time – but time was of the essence when the Tyrolean was diagnosed. A hormonal stimulation necessary for egg retrieval was no longer possible, the chemotherapy had to be started immediately.

The team at the Innsbruck University Clinic for Gynecological Endocrinology and Reproductive Medicine therefore decided to freeze the ovarian tissue. The method is now “established worldwide and more than 200 children have already been born healthy,” according to the tirol kliniken.

The patient eventually recovered. Last year, just a few weeks after the transplant, she developed her own menstrual cycle and became pregnant naturally.
