A 41-year-old man in Nußdorf am Attersee got into a precarious situation on Tuesday afternoon. He was standing on his motorboat, which suddenly exploded on the bank, and saved himself by jumping into the water.
A spokeswoman for the state police in Upper Austria said it had yet to be determined why the accident happened. The incident happened around 3 p.m. The 41-year-old Nußdorfer was in the boathouse and refueled his motorboat. He then pushed it into the water and started the engine. This resulted in the first explosive deflagration. His wife, who was standing on the jetty, called out to him to jump into the lake immediately, which the man did. At the same moment the second explosion happened.
The 41-year-old was able to swim to shore. He had suffered burn injuries of an unspecified degree. The ambulance transported him to Vöcklabruck, where he was admitted to the hospital. Meanwhile, his motorboat was already engulfed in flames and drifting dangerously close in the direction of the boathouse of a count’s estate. The forces of the Nußdorf fire brigade used a pedal boat to attach a rope to the bow of the boat. The motorboat was pulled to shore and the fire extinguished.
