El Salvador doubled the number of prisoners since the start of the state of emergency

According to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security, until last weekend the Salvadoran Police had captured 40,016 people within the framework of a State of Exception that enables the Government to suspend certain freedoms and guarantees.

We are about to win the war against the gangs. We have surpassed 40,000 terrorist arrests. This is a unique moment in the history of El Salvador,” the Ministry published on its website on Saturday after announcing the arrest of another 119 alleged criminals.

However, although the authorities celebrate the effectiveness of their campaign against crime, international organizations such as the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights or the NGO Amnesty International have expressed their concern about recent events.

According to these organizations, the state of emergency only increases the risk of arbitrary arrestsat the same time that they have denounced the number of prisoners killed in the custody of the penitentiary authorities.

Also, Salvadoran groups have focused on the conditions in prisons, denouncing the overcrowding of prisoners. According to Húber Romero, from the Azul Originario association, the situation of overcrowding in prisons had decreased until the decree of the state of emergency, which has caused the prison system “to have reached the limit.”

“We believe that the fact that many people deprived of liberty are dying, 43 to date, is an indicator that the conditions inside are not very favorable for people to stay alive,” he concluded.
