The Chilean Congress extended the state of emergency in the Mapuche conflict zone

In the first instance, it was voted on in the Chamber of Deputies, where it was approved with 126 votes in favor, seven against and nine abstentions, while the Senate approved it last night with 39 votes in favor, one against and two abstentions.

The vote against was from the independent senator Fabiola Campillai, who lost her sight due to a shot by a carabinieri during the social outbreak of 2019.

“I want to thank the parliamentarians, especially the parliamentarians of the ruling party, for supporting the Government in this definition,” said the Minister of the Interior, Izkia Sichesbefore the press after the vote in the Senate.

“Our balance is positive, we believe that there are no major modifications to be made, but every Thursday we hold operational meetings to evaluate modifications where the forces are deployed,” Siches reported earlier, from the Chilean Congress, in the city of Valparaíso, to 120 kilometers west of Santiago.

Measure “allowed to reduce acts of violence by more than 42%“, the official had argued, for which the Government requested the extension to Congress, which needed the approval of the Legislative Power after the second extension of 15 days.

The minister added that the State of Exception “allowed, as a complementary measure, to bring the Good Living Plan to the area and contribute with many of the functions that the state performs in the territory: the construction of roads, bringing essential basic supplies such as food, oil and gas”.

In the hours prior to the vote, blockades were recorded on different routes in the southern macrozonewhere organized groups erected barricades, set fire to vehicles and installed banners alluding to the Mapuche conflict on the roads, causing traffic to stop for a moment.

The conflict in this area of the country has been going on for decades and is due to a territorial dispute between the State, some Mapuche communities and forestry companies that exploit lands considered ancestral by the native peoples.

In this context, Chile applied the State of Emergency Constitutional Exception, which allows the support of the Armed Forces in security tasks in the area, which collaborate with the police.
