Wood instead of steel: New traffic sign bridge erected in Carinthia

The 30 meter long bridge, on which speed limits or traffic warnings are displayed, is considered a pilot project: if it is successful, wood will be used more in the future, Asfinag said in a broadcast on Friday.Völkermarkt. By using wood instead of steel, this bridge alone saves 35 tons of CO2, according to Asfinag. The building consists largely of local spruce wood, larch wood was also used as a protective layer. Moisture sensors are built into the bridge to check how the structure reacts to rain, heat and cold. The uprights are also made of wood, only the foundations were concreted. In terms of durability, wood might even be better suited for these purposes than steel. According to Asfinag, experts assume a service life of at least 20 years. The first findings of the project should be available in a year.
