Gustavo Petro and Rodolfo Hernández cross paths for not holding the debate

“I have personally sent a text to each of them (Hernandez’s advisers), inviting them so that, before RTVC, we define the rules of the debate. What we have verified today is that there is no will of Rodolfo Hernández to attend the debatePrada recounted.

Gustavo Petro’s team insisted that the Historical Pact was predisposed at all times to hold a face-to-face meeting before the second round of the elections, even before the Justice ordered it.

Prada also criticized Hernández for wanting to condition the debate in substance and form, while Petro delegated these aspects to RTVC at all times.

The Superior Court of Bogota ruled in favor of a tutelage for both candidates to confront their programs after Rodolfo Hernández was informed that he would limit his appearances on social networks until the date of the elections.

The independent candidate for the presidency of Colombia had a contradictory behavior when it came to debating. He first rejected the ruling and filed three objections not to face the leftist. On Thursday morning he rectified and, complaining about the “Stalinist” sentence, he agreed to debate.

But hours later, the former mayor of Bucaramanga said that he did not go to the meeting with Gustavo Petro’s team because Justice had not responded to his request for clarification of the Superior Court guardianship.

At this point, Hernández, a candidate for the League of Anticorruption Governors, accused the former mayor of Bogotá of not facilitating an agreement on the rules of the debate. “He responded to the invitation I made to him in a public letter, affirming that I do not put conditions on this debate and finished off by saying that we will see each other in Bucaramanga,” he clarified.

Thus, after this response, Hernández deduced that his rival “was not willing to strictly abide by what was ordered” and that the fact that he delegated the rules of the match in the hands of a third party showed that he did not want to comply with what was dictated by the Justice.

After this disagreement, the independent candidate again delegated to the Colombian Justice the decision to distribute responsibilities for not holding the debate.

Gustavo Petro and Rodolfo Hernández will meet on Sunday in the second round of presidential elections in which the polls show a technical tie between the two candidates.
