Through bottlenecks, over 145 meter long suspension bridges to the panorama descent

As reported, Donau Oberösterreich Tourismus offers 15 new adventure tours for pleasure bikers between Schärding and Grein, on which you not only cycle along the rivers Danube and Inn, but also climb higher vantage points with electric bikes and experience fantastic views can. And that relatively comfortably, the different tours also have different levels of difficulty and lengths between 26 kilometers and more than 100 kilometers.

The Inn-Danube circuit, starting at the shipping pier in Schärding, is 43.7 kilometers long and has an altitude difference of 383 meters. The route is signposted with “R1.01 Inn-Donau-Runde” for better orientation and leads at the beginning very relaxed along the Inn downstream, over the Pram bridge and on sand paths on the bank.

60 meter narrow bottleneck

After the Inn plain, the last gorge begins with the Bavarian monastery Vornbach, the entrance gate is the nature reserve “Vornbacher Enge”, the forest gorge is 60 meters narrow at the narrowest point. The route continues on paved cycle paths, side roads and finally via the Innstraße to the Mariensteg in Wernstein. On the 145 meter long suspension bridge over the Inn, which is only supported by a single 30 meter high support, you have a breathtaking view.

The route then continues to Passau and via Haibach on the Danube Cycle Path back to Upper Austria. Then it gets hilly, 180 meters in altitude have to be mastered on the Sauwald high plateau. At Gasthof Blass, however, the effort of the ascent is rewarded with an unusual view of Passau – and then the enjoyable highland cycling through pure rural idyll begins.

Three hour tour

The route leads back to the Inn Valley to Wernstein and back to Schärding via the panorama descent. The duration of the bike tour is around three hours. An ideal length, because Beate Kepplinger, Head of Marketing at Donau Oberösterreich Tourismus, knows: “Tourists no longer want to cycle from hotel to hotel, but prefer to have a fixed place to stay from which they can explore the area.”
