Hacker attack in Carinthia goes into “the next phase”

“We don’t have the data yet. But we believe that we’re going to the next phase of the attack,” says state spokesman Gerd Kurath.

A phase in which “information or disinformation is spread”. It is possible that the data that has now been published “is not exactly the data that was stored by us. One has to assume that it will be changed in order to foment disinformation,” says Kurath.

This approach serves to increase the pressure on the country. The only thing that is certain at the moment is that there was no further data theft after May 24. “So the data comes from the first strand of the story, even if hackers try to draw a different picture,” says the state spokesman.

data difficult to remove

Two weeks ago, on June 3rd, the hackers had put data on the Internet. At that time, however, they ended up in the “public” part of the Internet, and the link was quickly blocked at the instigation of the Ministry of the Interior. Now the situation is different: the data was leaked via an “onion” link.

These links lead to websites that can only be opened in the so-called Darknet with a special browser. This ensures that the people behind the websites remain anonymous and difficult to trace.

And therein lies the problem, according to IT entrepreneur Sebastian Bicchi: In this way, the data can no longer be easily removed from the Internet.

After the hacker attack at the end of May, which paralyzed large parts of the Carinthian state administration, “Black Cat” demanded five million dollars from the state of Carinthia. The authorities did not respond. Gradually it became known that the perpetrators had copied 250 gigabytes of data. Above all, it was data from the office of Governor Peter Kaiser (SP) and other government members. Among them were copies of the passports of state government employees.

According to state spokesman Kurath, the country is in contact with those people whose passports have been published. New passports are currently being applied for, and the state of Carinthia will bear the costs. Currently, none of those affected are taking legal action against the country.
