Of the 25-year-old from Bad Vöslau (Lower Austria) swam a new OSV record in the final in 3:43.58 minutes. As at the Tokyo Olympics, that was only enough for the thankless fourth place.
Australia’s Elijah Winnington took gold in 3:41.21 minutes, silver went to Germany’s Lukas Martens. The Brazilian Guilherme Costa snatched the bronze medal away from Aubock by 27 hundredths.
With the best time in the run-up on Saturday morning, Auböck had nurtured hopes of his third medal at major events. In the final a few hours later, the 25-year-old from Lower Austria improved his Austrian record again, but that wasn’t enough for a medal in the atmospheric Duna Arena.
The dry spell for the Austrian Swimming Association (OSV) at the Long Course World Championships continues. Mirna Jukic won the last medal so far with bronze 13 years ago in Rome.
