Applications from men particularly welcome – excitement about job advertisements

After the neutrally formulated advertisement texts, there is a note that applications from men are particularly welcome, the ORF Carinthia reported. Mayor Christian Scheider (Team Carinthia) referred to the state law, according to which no gender should be discriminated against – not even men.

According to the report, people are being sought to head the Presidium, social workers and doctors. Each advertisement is worded neutrally, so it is aimed at women and men alike. What is striking, however, is a passage after each advertisement, according to which applications from men are particularly welcome. This is because “the proportion of men in the sphere of action of the respective service authority in such a use or function is less than 50 percent,” the “note” said.

Scheider referred to the state law, but admitted to the ORF that the optics were not the best: “It seems strange, but it is the case that we are legally obliged to do so”. You just stick to the law, because “otherwise you would have to overturn the state law”.

The lawyer Michael Wohlgemuth, who specializes in labor law, spoke of a theoretical possibility in the law. If there was a factual justification and there were actually a lot of women on the labor market, then that would be possible. According to the lawyer, he would not have recommended this approach to the city.

However, the mayor stated that there are actually departments with a very high proportion of women in the workforce: “In certain departments 70 to 80 percent”.
