On Monday, the Israeli Prime Minister, Naftali Bennettand the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yair Lapidannounced their intention to dissolve parliament “after having exhausted all attempts to stabilize” their coalition, a decision that will lead to the fifth elections in less than four years.
Bennett and Lapid managed to form in June 2021 a unique coalition in the history of Israel made up of parties from the right, center, left and for the first time by an Arab formation. All this in order to put an end to 12 years of government of Benjamin Netanyahuright-wing party leader Likud.
As their agreement provided for the rotation of the two men in the prime ministerial position and the replacement of Bennett by Lapid in case of dissolution, the latter could become the next head of government until the formation of a new executive, if this bill is approved.
Until the dissolution becomes effective, the opposition can try to gather 61 deputies, that is, a majority that could avoid elections and ask to form a new government.
“There is still the possibility of an alternative government led by Netanyahu,” Miri Regev, a Likud deputy, said on military radio on Wednesday.
In recent weeks, Bennett’s coalition has suffered several setbacks that have severely weakened it. On June 6, the opposition achieved a majority and succeeded in not extending a regulation that provides that the more than 475,000 settlers of West BankPalestinian territory occupied by Israel, Israeli law applies to them.
This law can still be approved until June 30 and if not, Israeli law will no longer protect these settlers. But if parliament dissolves, the law will automatically be extended.
