Petro announces that it will reopen the border with Venezuela

For his part, Maduro had said before the second round that “whoever wins” hoped to rebuild the link with the neighboring country.

Caracas and Bogotá have had strained ties for years and in 2015 Maduro ordered the border to be closed after denouncing an “ambush” on the Venezuelan military, which cut off the flow of trade between the two countries, which share a long land border of about 2,200 kilometers.

Last October, Venezuela announced the “commercial opening” of its border in the Táchira state, although the passage remains restricted and hardens according to the tensions between the two governments.

This binational step, the most important in the country, was closed in February 2019 after a failed entry of humanitarian aid headed by opposition leader Juan Guaidó, whom the Government of Iván Duque recognizes – like other countries – as president in charge of Venezuela. .

Maduro then denounced the event as an attempted foreign “invasion”, broke off diplomatic relations with Bogotá for his recognition of Guaidó and even cut off the pedestrian crossing.
