Gasgrid Finland will establish a subsidiary that will develop the hydrogen transportation network first in Finland and then abroad, Saarikko said, adding that hydrogen production would be left to private companies.
As he indicated, the network, which will take years to complete, will consist of three “hydrogen valleys”two of them on the west coast, near existing wind power infrastructure, and one in the southeast.

The government did not indicate the cost of the network, saying it will initially be financed from existing Gasgrid capital.
Construction will start in the southeast, near the Russian border, with a 15-kilometre hydrogen pipeline from chemical producer Kemira’s fertilizer plant in Joutseno to steelmaker Ovako’s plant in Imatra, Saarikko said.
