Remains of a 1,200-year-old mosque found in Israel

The mosque includes “a square piece and a wall facing Mecca”, with a place of prayer (mihrab) in a semicircle facing south, the organization assured today through a statement and remarked that “these unique architectural characteristics show that the building was used as a mosque”.

Near the mosque, a luxurious building was found, with remains of crockery and glass objects that give indications of the wealth of the inhabitants, the authorities said.

In 2019, traces of a rural mosque dating from the same period had already been exhumed in Rahat, while the remains of the new discovery are “the oldest in the world” and allow to know more about the “introduction of a new religion – Islam – and a new domination and culture in the region,” the AIA said.

The exhumed mosques in Rahat will be preserved in their current location, either as historical monuments or active places of worship, the authorities added.
