The meeting, which was convened by the director general of the WHO under the International Health Regulations (ISR), aimed to assess whether monkeypox constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Importance.
If so, they will be proposed temporary recommendations on how to prevent and better reduce the spread of disease and manage the global public health response.
From 2005 to the present there have been nine RIS emergency committees, including two ongoing on Poliomyelitis and Covid-19.
According to the latest WHO report, dated June 17, between January 1 and June 15, 2022, the agency was notified a cumulative total of 2,103 confirmed cases by laboratory, one probable case and one death in 42 countries in five regions.
The majority (84%) of the confirmed cases (1773 patients) are from the WHO European Region; confirmed cases have also been reported in the African Region (64 patients; 3%), the Region of the Americas (245 patients; 12%), the Eastern Mediterranean Region (14 patients; less than 1%), and the Region of the Western Pacific (7 patients; less than 1%).
The global public health risk is assessed as moderate considering this is the first time monkeypox cases and clusters have been reported at the same time in many countries in WHO geographic areas. Mortality, meanwhile, has remained low in the current outbreak.
The WHO analyzes changing the name
