The 5.9-magnitude earthquake that hit eastern Afghanistan near the Pakistani border on Wednesday left more than 1,000 dead, 3,000 injured and thousands homeless.

In some of the worst-affected districts, entire villages were razed to the ground and survivors say they can’t even find the shovels needed to bury the dead.

“There are no blankets, no tents, no shelters. Our entire water distribution system is destroyed. Everything is devastated, houses are destroyed. There is literally nothing to eat,” Zaitullah Ghurziwal told an AFP team. 21 years old, in a village in the province of Paktika.

Authorities estimate that close to 10,000 houses were destroyed, a very alarming figure in an area where the average household houses 20 people.
