Russia bombed kyiv before the start of the G7 summit over the war in Ukraine

At least two people were hospitalized, the capital’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said on Telegram, specifying that two buildings had been hit and there were people “under the rubble”, so the balance could worsen.

The mayor then went to the site of the bombing. The attack came hours before the opening of a G7 summit in Germany to discuss, until next Tuesday, the progress of the war in Ukraine and its economic consequences.

After the meeting, the leaders of the 30 NATO countries will hold another summit in Madrid, Spain, also focused on the conflict. The top three floors of one of the buildings hit in kyiv were set on fire and the staircase completely destroyed, as police cordoned off the area, the AFP news agency reported.

“A missile was shot down by anti-aircraft defense in the kyiv region, debris fell on a village”, said the governor of the kyiv region, Oleksiy Kuleba, on Telegram. “The enemy hit the capital,” he added.

Klitschko said earlier that ambulances and rescue personnel were at the scene of the attack.

“In two buildings, the rescue and evacuation of residents is ongoing,” it added.

A Ukrainian MP, Oleksiï Goncharenko, said on Telegram that Russia had fired 14 missiles at kyiv and its region in the morning. Many residents, including a woman in a bathrobe, were at the foot of the buildings. Many of them cried.

The last Russian attack before these was in early June against a factory on the outskirts of kyiv and left one injured.
