First of all, it turns out differently, and secondly, than you might think: the main act of the opening evening of the Steyr city festival on Friday evening was a stroke of luck. Just when Mayor Markus Vogl (SP) was supposed to declare the “Steyrer Stadtfest 2022” open on the main stage in front of the town hall, the weather service issued a warning of a thunderstorm and heavy rain. But only after the first-class gypsy swing band “Gewürztraminer” packed their musical instruments back into their cases did it start to dribble and then pour.
The start of the grassland festival associated with the city festival in the castle park did not exactly go like clockwork. Because the main band “Catastrophe and Cure” had to cancel due to a corona disease, the volunteers of the cultural association always had their cell phones to their ears. And at the last minute they managed more than just a replacement: the pop duo “Anger”, Julian Angerer and Nora Pider from Brixen in South Tyrol, who live in Vienna, packed their equipment in the trunk and rushed to Steyr. “I’m used to the mountains,” said Julian when he welcomed him, “but when we drove into Steyr, I thought, fuck, that’s nice!” The music numbers of the two, which were not awarded the FM4 Award at the Amadeus 2020 for nothing, were simply pleasant to listen to.
The entire city festival was more relaxing than ever before. 2000 visitors at the “Gewürztraminer” on Friday evening and as many people at the same time at the Grünland Festival were not crowded. But they didn’t want them at all either. The city festival was spatially expanded with new venues such as the forecourt of the Innerberger Stadel with turf surface or the Badegasse.
The city festival also became a bit more family-friendly, because club life was not only presented at the tasting stands and drinks stands. Word has got around that the consumption of lemonade and soft drinks also fills the coffers for the work of the volunteers. Franz Neuhauser, paramedic and veteran of the Red Cross, only had to take care of one patient in the tent on the opening day. The woman was put up on the camp bed and given a cup of Coke, then she was fine again after her circulatory collapse. On Saturday she was at the party again.
