Videos posted on social media showed the moment when a section of the makeshift bullring made of wooden planks collapsed and fell into the arena.
Major Luis Fernando Vélez, director of the department’s Civil Defense, told Caracol Television that people had been rescued from the rubble and that others who had been reported missing had already been found.
“At the site of the incident, the emergency was overcome, more or less 70 people seriously injured,” said Vélez.
Several ambulances were sent from the nearby cities of Ibagué and Melgar to treat the wounded, which overwhelmed the capacity of the El Espinal hospital, the official added. (Reporting by Nelson Bocanegra and Julia Symmes Cobb)
