With a patch over his left eye and a headband pulled down at an angle (probably to fix the patch), Wilfried Happio competed in the 400-meter hurdles at the French Athletics Championships in Caen at the weekend.
The 23-year-old was visibly marked. The reason was an incident during the warm-up when, according to media reports, an unknown person attacked him. “Someone jumped on him and hit him. A guy came out of nowhere and asked him if he was Wilfried Happio – and suddenly attacked him,” coach Olivier Vallaeys told AFP. The coach tried to arrest the perpetrator before he was arrested. “We are in shock. I have no words, it was pure aggression,” Vallaeys continued.
However, Happio was not discouraged by this. Despite the association, he drummed down the 400-meter hurdles in a personal best of 48.57 seconds. He undercut the limit for the World Championships in Eugene.
