The initiative intends to be constituted as a response to the great works financed by China within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative.
The World Association for Infrastructure (“Partnership for Global Infrastructure”) must, according to the same source, “provide sustainable quality infrastructure”.
The G7 “was given the ambition to make a better offer in the world in terms of investment in infrastructures,” underlined German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who presented the project alongside the US president.
The United States promised to “mobilize” some “200,000 million dollars” in five years for this program. But that word, “mobilize”, does not mean that the States will contribute those enormous sums.
Beyond the meeting of the seven richest democracies – the United States, Canada, Japan, Germany, France, Italy, the United Kingdom – Biden is already setting his sights on the NATO summit to be held in Madrid between tomorrow and Thursday. In it, Washington is confident that the new Atlantic Alliance strategy document will include a “strong” position on China, a Democratic administration official said yesterday, adding that negotiations on how to refer to Beijing were still ongoing.
The military alliance is working on the preparation of a new strategic concept, a document that establishes its objectives and values, which will be presented at a summit in Madrid.
“They talked about China, which is going to be a big topic for this trip,” the official said after a meeting between President Joe Biden and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on the sidelines of the G7 summit.
Beyond this, the exclusive issue of the G7 meeting is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The leaders opened the meeting yesterday with the announcement of new sanctions against Moscow and called for the group’s unity, which, however, exhibited nuances.
“United, the G7 will announce that we will ban Russian gold, one of the main sources of exports, which will deprive Russia of billions of dollars,” the US president tweeted.
Waiting for a collective announcement at the end of tomorrow’s meeting, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan went ahead and announced an embargo on gold recently mined in Russia, meeting reluctance in the countries of the European Union.
“These measures will hit the Russian oligarchs directly and strike at the heart of Putin’s war machine,” said British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Russia is a major gold producer whose exports accounted for about $15.5 billion in 2021, according to Downing Street.
The Ukrainian president, Volodímir Zelenski, will participate today electronically. He continues to press for a greater shipment of Western weapons to deal with the attack, something that Biden will insist on in his contacts with Scholz.
Limit
Another moment that highlighted the differences between the group’s countries came when British Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned French President Emmanuel Macron against trying to find a negotiated solution to the war.
The two leaders, who met on the sidelines of the summit, agreed that the current is “a critical moment for the evolution of the conflict and that it is possible to change the course of the war,” said a British government spokesman.
Johnson and Macron also agreed to “strengthen” military support for kyiv against Russia, which began an invasion of the former Soviet republic on February 24, according to the same source.
“The prime minister stressed that any attempt to settle the conflict now would only cause more instability and give Putin the right to manipulate sovereign countries and international markets forever,” he added.
Johnson “is concerned that some comments suggest that it would be in Ukraine’s interest to try to negotiate now and give up its sovereignty in parts of the east in exchange for peace,” he told reporters. “That would not be good.”
Contrary to Macron, Johnson rejects any dialogue with Putin, whom he describes as a “dictator” since the beginning of the invasion. However, the spokesman for the former tried to decompress the situation by pointing out that these comments did not target Macron in particular.
