Peru declares a state of emergency after the announcement of the truckers’ strike

Trucker leaders had unsuccessfully met over the weekend with government representatives to present their demands.. The leader of the union of heavy cargo carriers, Marlon Milla, had announced the strike since Monday of his union, which brings together 400,000 units in Peru.

Some unions in the agricultural sector also announced that they would join the strike, in protest at the rise in fertilizer prices and shortages of this product just over a month before the start of the national planting campaign.

High global fuel prices linked to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have fueled unrest in Peru, the world’s second-largest copper producer. The government of leftist President Pedro Castillo has taken steps to curb rising costs of living, but the annual inflation rate remains around 8%, its highest level in 24 years.

Juan Marchese, president of the National Transporters Union, told the local América Televisión on Monday that the forceful measure of his union would only be seen in the next few hours and that the latest government proposals such as subsidizing tolls and the promise to stabilize the price of fuel for 60 days were insufficient.

President Castillo’s popularity has plummeted amid corruption investigations into his government and protests after taking office in July last year, promising to provide benefits to the poorest in the Andean country.
