The heavy storm was a long time coming

UPPER AUSTRIA. Shortly before 7 p.m., the state fire brigade command counted zero operations for a short time. It seemed like it was literally the calm before the storm. Because, as reported, the experts at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics (ZAMG) had announced severe thunderstorms for Monday evening in Upper Austria: with hurricane gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour.

The most intense phase is to be expected between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., it said. But the storm front was delayed. The fire brigades did not deploy until around 9 p.m. Storm damage and flooding occurred particularly in the districts of Kirchdorf and Steyr-Land. The ZAMG weather station in Windischgarsten recorded heavy rain from 9 p.m. with precipitation of more than 30 liters per square meter. At the time of going to press, however, no nationwide damage was known.

Heat also in Carinthia

Clear sunshine characterized the afternoon, high air pressure in connection with subtropical warm air masses was responsible for this. Almost 34 degrees air temperature in Linz, the thermometer climbed to 33.7 degrees in Schärding. In Windischgarsten even 35.1 degrees were measured: the national record. It was even hotter in Villach in Carinthia with 35.9 degrees and in Mayrhofen in Tyrol with 35.6 degrees.

But even at 7 p.m., the measured amounts of precipitation in Upper Austria were zero liters per square meter. The situation in Bavaria was similar. The German weather service had issued storm warnings, especially for the greater Munich area. But even there it was still dry in the early evening.

Hail was also expected in Upper Austria. According to yesterday’s forecasts, the wind peaks should be the strongest in the lowlands: in Kirchdorf an der Krems to Linz and in the Machland. Here the warning level was “orange”, in the other parts of the country “yellow” was declared, for example for the Inner Salzkammergut and parts of the southern Eisenwurzen.

Infrastructural damage is also to be feared at the “Orange” warning level. For example, fallen trees can block roads, roof tiles can come loose and fall down. Unsecured garden furniture can be thrown through the air.
