This was announced by the Austrian hail insurance on Tuesday night. The districts of Kirchdorf, Steyr, Linz, Urfahr, Freistadt and Perg were particularly affected.

Arable crops, apples and grassland were massively damaged over an area of around 16,000 hectares. “Our farmers are having an increasingly difficult time due to the increasing number of extreme weather events caused by climate change. Only a week ago, agriculture in Upper Austria was hit by severe storms,” explained Mario Winkler, spokesman for the Austrian hail insurance company, in a broadcast. According to the first surveys, a total damage of 6.5 million euros is to be expected.

1200 emergency services in action

The emergency services were in full swing: 77 fire brigades had to be deployed with around 1,200 emergency services in almost 200 operations. In addition to flooding of buildings, traffic accidents and fallen trees, people also had to be rescued from lifts after power failures. Even around midnight, 37 fire brigades were still on duty.

Great luck for drivers

In Niederneukirchen, a driver had unimaginable luck when his car was killed by a tree. He escaped unhurt and scared. The fire brigade carried out the clean-up work with the help of a tractor.

35 degree mark could be cracked again

The Landeswarnzentrale had warned of heavy gusts of wind in the evening in parts of Upper Austria on Monday morning. On Monday afternoon, high air pressure combined with subtropical warm air masses caused the first highs of the current week, with Villach in Carinthia measuring 35.9 degrees Celsius (as of 4:30 p.m.) in first place. With 35.6 degrees, the second highest daily value was registered in Mayrhofen in Tyrol. More than 35 degrees were still reached in Windischgarsten in Upper Austria, where the thermometer rose to 35.4 degrees, as it did in Ferlach in Carinthia. Over 190 stations recorded at least 30 degrees and above. While a slight cooling is announced on Tuesday, especially in the thunderstorm zones of western Austria, 35 degrees can be reached again on Wednesday and Friday in the eastern parts of the country.
