Prince Charles received bags of money from a Qatari sheikh

Although the investigation will not be criminal, it represents a headache for Isabel II and Charles, focused on activities that show the queen still in charge, but also hint that the heir to the throne is ready for his future responsibility in charge of United Kingdom.

According to the press, Carlos received millionaire cash donations, in 2011 and 2015, made by Sheikh Hamad bin Yasim bin Yaber al Zanitycoon and former prime minister of Qatar, as well as a member of the ruling dynasty in that Gulf monarchy allied to the United States and the United Kingdom.

Clarence House – the royal residence – insists that everything was done in full compliance not only with the law but also with customs and statutes.

However, British royal gift policy states that they can accept a check from a donor, but nothing specific about cash.

According to the royal house, the money (three million euros) was legally entered into the coffers of one of the charities sponsored by Prince Charles. What is surprising is the way it was delivered: in three sections and in bags.

The first two payments were made in bags from the prestigious delicatessen Fortnum & Mason from London and advisers to the prince, while the latter arrived directly at the hands of Carlos and in a briefcase.

All within the framework of informal conversations which, according to the Sunday Times, there is no trace in the official agenda of the time.

To make matters worse, there is also the precedent of another investigation opened for some time on the Prince’s Foundation, one of the charities promoted personally by Carlos: not only by the Charity Commission in that case, but also by the police, by the supposed exchange between donations and royal honors negotiated with a Saudi intermediary.

The policy of benefits, such as receiving royal honours, in exchange for money or personal efforts, is a very sensitive issue in the United Kingdom, where the monarchy enjoys a good reputation after 70 years of impeccable leadership by Elizabeth II.
