Bolsonaro opts for a general as vice and irritates the powerful centrão

At the same time, the political wing of the government, made up of a group of conservative parties grouped in a coalition called “center“, let transcend his disagreement with the probable almost certain appointment of Braga Netto.

“Within the military group, President Bolsonaro already has a well-established base, General Braga Netto, the president likes his job,” Vice President Mourão pondered.

Retired general Mourão, who was elected vice president in 2018, claimed to have taken naturally having been ruled out by Bolsonaro for the formula with which he will seek a second term in Brazil.

“Braga Netto is going to contribute what Bolsonaro considers he needs” in view of the elections on October 2, which is shaping up to be a polarized duel between the current president of the Liberal Party (PL, right) and former president Lula da Silvaof workers party (PT, left).

The latest survey by the Datafolha agency, released last week, showed Lula da Silva in the lead with 47% of voting intentions compared to 28% for Bolsonaro.

Although Bolsonaro has not yet made an official announcement, this Monday in Brasilia politicians and officials agreed that Braga Netto is the vice-presidential candidate.

On Sunday night, in an interview, Bolsonaro said that the general is his favorite to complete the formula without this going to the detriment of the former Minister of Agriculture, Tereza Cristina, representative of the powerful agribusiness.

The name of the former minister was defended by ministers and legislators from the “centrão” suspicious of the figure of Braga Netto, whose popularity is not high, according to polls circulating confidentially in Brasilia.

Commentator Ricardo Noblat, one of the most experienced in Brazilian politics, stated that the “centrão” was defeated in the “battle” for the vice presidency.

This short-term setback could open the door to a silent distancing from some caciques of the “centrão” who see few chances of victory for Bolsonaro in his bid for re-election.

Among those referents there are some who do not plan to campaign in their districts attached to the name of a downcast Bolsonaro, and would prefer to link their regional campaigns to the national candidacy of Lula, whom the polls show as the favorite at the moment.

Of course, there are still four months left for the duel in Brazil and many changes may occur in the polls, and the men of the “centrão” are skilled in the art of adjusting their positions depending on how the political winds blow.
