Austrian injured in small plane crash in Croatia

The Cessna 172 crashed Tuesday morning during a panoramic flight over the island of Brac, Croatian media reported. The occupants were flown to the hospital in Split in a military helicopter.

All persons except mortal danger

“All three people are out of danger,” said a fire department commander, according to the Hina news agency. According to the head of neurosurgery at Split University Hospital, Vlatko Ledenko, the two Austrian passengers suffered multiple vertebral fractures. “These are stable fractures that do not require surgical treatment. Both of them have no neurological damage,” the doctor said, according to the news portal “tportal.hr”. The pilot was less seriously injured and could be discharged from the hospital in as little as a day or two.

The small plane reportedly took off from Brac Airport. The plane crashed on the south side of the island near the Blaca Monastery.

“Something was wrong with the engine”

Flight control was alerted at around 9:30 a.m. According to the fire brigade commander, one of the inmates had reported himself. The accident happened in a difficult-to-reach area. A drone was also used to search for the wreck. The rescue teams were at the crash site about an hour after the alarm was raised. All three occupants were conscious. They were outside the wreck, the media reported.

According to an eyewitness, just before the crash, the plane sounded unusual, flying low and slow. “Something was wrong with the engine. You could hear it rustling, it made a strange noise as if something was about to break,” a security guard at the monastery museum told the local newspaper Slobodna Dalmacija.
